Internet Security
This area of our website is dedicated to the education of our members regarding security issues that may impact their lives. Swindlers utilize numerous methods to exploit others, but one thing is certain, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!”
If you receive a suspicious email or a pop-up window asking you to verify or submit confidential or personal information such as your account number, PIN or password, do not respond and do not click on any of the links provided.
Password Security
Strong passwords are important protections to help you have safer online transactions. An ideal password is long and has letters, punctuation, symbols, and numbers:
- whenever possible, use at least 8 characters or more;
- the greater the variety of characters in your password, the better; and
- use the entire keyboard, not just the letters and characters you use or see most often.
Identity Theft Prevention
Identity theft is any kind of fraud that results in the loss of personal data, such as passwords, user names, account information, or credit card numbers. Online identity theft is sometimes also known as phishing.
Identity theft isn’t new. Thieves have always found ways to illegally acquire people’s personal information through confidence scams (also known as social engineering), stealing mail from mailboxes, or even looking through trash cans or dumpsters. Now that identity theft has moved online, criminals can scam a greater number of people, which makes it much more profitable.
For information on how to avoid online identity theft, see the Government of Canada recommendations.
Anti-Phishing
Phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details from unsuspecting people by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. If you’ve been a victim of phishing, take action here: www.antiphishing.org.
